Opa! Opa!
I have decided to coin a term based on my various dining experiences. When I began to consider this step I thought carefully and arrived at the term gastro cultural anthropologist. I have decided the meaning of this term would be one who experiences the world’s cultures through their foods and am proud to consider myself a gastro cultural anthropologist. I hold no degree in anthropology, nor am I pretending to be something I am not. I am merely a man who loves culture and loves food. One of the greatest cultures the world has ever known is the culture of ancient Greece. Ancient Greece has often been called the cradle of western civilization and the accomplishments of the ancient Greeks cannot be overstated.
Sacramento, CA has been blessed with a small glimpse of this culture through the owners of a quaint eatery on J Street called Opa! Opa! Located at 5644 J St in Sacramento, CA (916)451-4000 Opa! Opa! is a small and unobtrusive little place located in a mini-strip mall for lack of a better term. Upon entering the restaurant one is greeted with an open, clean, friendly environment that is distinctly Greek in flavor. Ordering is done at the cafeteria style rail that runs along the prep area. Drinks and payment are accomplished at the far end of the rail and the wait for your food is rarely long depending on your order. The staff is friendly and eager to explain any questions you may have about menu items. I particularly like the fact that all their cooking and prep areas are open to public view and in turn public scrutiny. This gives the impression that your food will be safe as they have no fear in showing their prep areas.
For such a small place their menu selections are numerous and pleasing. As is to be expected from a Greek/Mediterranean menu it is heavy on lamb, which I love. The traditional fare of Gyros, hummus, and other Greek and Mediterranean delights are offered, but nestled amongst the lamb and hummus is a wonderful macaroni and cheese for the kids. The Gyros can only compare to those I have had in traditional Greek restaurants in Europe, they are every bit that good. Their roasted lamb literally falls off the bone and is tender and juicy. My favorite on the menu, by far, is the fried Calamari. It is breaded in a delicately spicy batter and deep fried. To some the calamari may be unappealing because they are not the neat little rings so often offered as calamari, but are the actual small squid with tentacles attached. This is very traditional and only enhances the experience for me. Best of all one serving of the calamari feeds both my children and they love it!
The grill at Opa Opa is constantly busy grilling everything from vegetables and seafood to burgers and steaks. I have yet to try their burgers or steaks, as when I go I am in a Greek mood, but I have never been disappointed with any of the vegetarian dishes.
The prices are moderate and a family of four can enjoy a good meal for around $30.00. To add to the experience I highly recommend the Summer in Athens salad, especially on a hot Sacramento day. The only thing missing from this wonderful dining experience is Greek music and some Uzo. Alas the world is not perfect, but Opa Opa skims the boundaries of perfection nicely. Opa!
